Zimbabwe has long held a premier position in global tobacco production. How We Operate

We are vertically integrated across the full value chain. We contract and finance smallholder and medium-scale growers, providing agronomic supervision, GAP compliance enforcement, and child labour prohibition oversight across every contracted hectare. Tobacco is procured directly from our grower network — no middlemen, no unverified sources — and processed through Green Leaf Threshing (GLT) into export-ready products built to international buyer specifications.Every bale leaving our facility carries registered identification, full chain-of-custody documentation, and TIMB certification. Our export corridors run through Beira and Dar es Salaam, serving buyers on FOB terms with consistent lead times and documentation integrity.

Stalwart Tobacco (Private) Limited recognises that access to global markets increasingly depends on demonstrated Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance. This policy is grounded in the regulatory framework of the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB), the laws of Zimbabwe, and the internationally recognised Sustainable Tobacco Programme (STP) — the industry-wide ESG framework developed in collaboration with global leaf merchants and manufacturers.The STP is aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and structured around eight priority themes. Stalwart Tobacco adopts these themes as the backbone of this policy:

Environmental

Deforestation & Forest Management

Tobacco curing is a primary driver of deforestation in Zimbabwe. The Forestry Commission of Zimbabwe estimates that tobacco farmers account for approximately 60,000 hectares of deforestation annually — around 20% of the country's total forest loss. Stalwart Tobacco is committed to actively countering this trend.In compliance with Zimbabwean law and TIMB requirements under Statutory Instrument 116 of 2012, all contracted growers are required to establish and maintain woodlots of at least 0.3 hectares per hectare of tobacco grown. Growers who fail to maintain living woodlots will not be renewed for contracting.

Energy Efficiency in Curing

Stalwart Tobacco supports the adoption of fuel-efficient curing barns across its contracted grower network. In line with STP requirements, we promote energy conservation techniques to improve curing efficiency and support farmers in becoming self-sufficient in fuel through woodlot establishment. The adoption of rocket barns and alternative energy sources is actively encouraged within our contracting framework.

Agrochemicals & Soil Health

Our agrochemical use policy mandates integrated pest management (IPM), soil conservation, water conservation, and pollution prevention to maximise yields while minimising dependence on synthetic chemicals. No genetically modified (GM) tobacco is permitted anywhere in our supply chain. All contracted growers submit annual risk assessments documenting agrochemical types and quantities prior to each growing season.

Water Management

Water conservation is embedded in our contracted grower supervision programme. Growers receive training in efficient irrigation practices, water use monitoring, and runoff management aligned with STP water management criteria. Pollution prevention protocols are enforced across all contracted hectares to protect local water sources from agrochemical contamination.

Social

Child Labour Prohibition

Child labour is a documented and acknowledged risk in Zimbabwe's tobacco sector. Stalwart Tobacco adopts a zero-tolerance position with no exceptions.In line with TIMB's Agricultural Labour Practices (ALP) Code introduced in 2023, all stakeholders in the Zimbabwean tobacco value chain are required to embed a human rights due diligence process in accordance with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

Forced & Bonded Labour

The TIMB ALP Code requires the progressive elimination of child labour and forced labour, improved social and labour conditions, and the upholding of human rights across all Zimbabwean tobacco supply chains. Stalwart Tobacco enforces this across all contracted operations without exception. No grower is permitted to use coercive, bonded, debt-bondage, or trafficked labour in any form. Voluntary employment under legally compliant terms is the sole permitted labour arrangement.

Worker Health & Safety

Contracted growers and farm workers are trained in the safe handling of tobacco leaf, including protocols for minimising nicotine absorption through skin contact during harvesting and curing. Green Tobacco Sickness (GTS) awareness training is conducted at the start of each growing season. Agrochemical safety training — including safe handling, storage, and disposal — is delivered prior to each season.Provision of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a contractual condition for all Stalwart Tobacco contracted growers. Non-provision constitutes a breach of contract.

Farmer Livelihoods

In line with the STP's livelihoods framework, Stalwart Tobacco is committed to supporting prosperous and sustainable livelihoods for all farmers in its supply chain. Contract pricing is agreed and paid promptly following delivery and grading. No retrospective price adjustments are permitted without written grower consent.Side marketing — the diversion of contracted tobacco to unauthorised buyers — is contractually prohibited. Side marketing undermines the financial stability of the contracting system and deprives the grower of contract-backed agronomic support, inputs, and finance.

Community Commitment

Stalwart Tobacco operates in tobacco-growing communities and recognises its responsibility beyond the contractual relationship. We actively support TIMB's broader sustainability field days and capacity-building programmes across Zimbabwe's four major tobacco-growing provinces — Manicaland, Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland East, and Mashonaland West.Community engagement forms part of our contracted grower onboarding process, and grower feedback mechanisms are maintained throughout each growing season.

Governance

TIMB Regulatory Compliance

TIMB is Zimbabwe's regulatory and advisory statutory board whose functions include controlling and regulating the growing, marketing, and exporting of tobacco in Zimbabwe. Stalwart Tobacco operates in full compliance with all TIMB licensing, registration, contracting, processing, and export requirements under the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board Act.

Traceability & Documentation

Full chain-of-custody documentation is maintained from contracted hectare to export shipment. Every bale is assigned a registered identification number traceable to its contracted grower, contracted farm, and marketing season. This documentation is available to buyers upon request and is integral to our compliance with international procurement standards.Export documentation is issued in compliance with TIMB licensing and shipment certification requirements. FOB export corridors run through Beira and Dar es Salaam with full customs and phytosanitary documentation.

Anti-Corruption & Ethical Trade

Stalwart Tobacco prohibits bribery, facilitation payments, and fraudulent trade documentation across all operations. We do not engage in or facilitate side marketing arrangements. All transactions are conducted on a transparent, contracted basis with full documentation.Our anti-corruption stance aligns with the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) mandate and with international buyer requirements for governance transparency in commodity supply chains.

Sustainable Tobacco Programme (STP) Alignment

Participation in the Sustainable Tobacco Programme is a contractual requirement imposed by major international leaf buyers on their suppliers. Non-compliance can result in suspension or termination of supply agreements. Stalwart Tobacco aligns its operations with STP criteria across all eight programme themes.We support buyer-initiated self-assessments, third-party audits, and In-Depth Assessments (IDAs) as part of our long-term supply partnership commitments. Annual self-assessments are conducted against STP themes and submitted to buyers upon request.

National Strategy Alignment

Zimbabwe's Tobacco Industry Transformation Blueprint feeds directly into the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2), the Agriculture, Food Systems and Rural Transformation Strategy (AFSRTS), and the country's Vision 2030 aspirations for a middle-income economy. Stalwart Tobacco's ESG commitments are aligned with these national frameworks.Our operations — contracting, processing, and exporting — directly support Zimbabwe's strategic priority of increasing the share of tobacco value addition conducted domestically, currently targeted to rise from 2% toward 30% by 2030 under the Tobacco Value Chain Transformation Plan.

This ESG Policy is reviewed annually by the Board of Directors of Stalwart Tobacco (Private) Limited.
